A VIP CONFIRMATION CEREMONY: 9-year-old Mateusz Stukan is a very special boy. In June, illness prevented Mateusz from making his Confirmation with his classmates from St John’s Primary in Rosyth, Fife. So, instead, Archbishop Leo Cushley invited him to the Archbishop’s residence, St Bennet's in Edinburgh, to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in a ceremony…just for Mateusz. Read the Full Story
CEMETERY FRAUD CONVICTION: The Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh today welcomed the conviction of the former Superintendent of the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Edinburgh, 46-year-old Willie Henderson, after he pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of pounds from the Archdiocese in a fraudulent scheme that involved selling forged burial deeds to grieving families. “There are two victims of Willie Henderson’s criminal behaviour: The Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh which has been defrauded of thousands of pounds but, much more significantly and disturbingly, is the impact on those families who were exploited by him at a time when they were grieving and vulnerable. That’s why his crimes are so shocking,” said Dr Elspeth Atkinson, Chief Operating Officer of the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh, 31 August. “The Archdiocese deeply regrets the criminal activities of Willie Henderson and has been working hard over the past months to offer both pastoral and practical support to those families affected by his actions and we will, of course, continue to do so in the months to come.” Read the Full Story

GOLDEN DAY FOR SISTER JOSEPHINE: It was a golden day at Carmel in Dysart, Fife, as Sister Josephine of the Sacred Heart recently celebrated 50 years as a professed Discalced Carmelite. “I’m excited, pleased, happy, grateful, a little bit nervous, very thrilled to have Archbishop Cushley and family from far and wide here today and, most importantly, I’m very grateful to God for all he’s done for me,” said Sister Josephine,“I’ve been sustained over the past 50 years by the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and also the love of his mother – that’s not just a corny answer, it really is true.” Read the Full Story
CURIAL REFORM BRIEFING: On Monday 7 August, Archbishop Leo Cushley announced the proposed reform of the Curia of the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh. This started a period of consultation with the curial staff affected. Below is the Archbishop Cushley’s message outlining his rationale for renewing the structure of the Curia as he “endeavours to build and live a Vatican II Church” in collaboration with the clergy and laity of the Archdiocese. Appropriately, the Archbishop unveiled his proposal to the existing curial staff and was keen to reassure them that any proposed structural renewal in no way reflects upon their professional competence or commitment to the Archdiocese which is, of course, greatly valued.   Read the Full Story
